The SEL Integration Approach School Leader and Educator Self-Reflection Tools were created to support both individual and collaborative reflection for educators and school leaders. These tools are intended to be used in conjunction with Transforming Education’s SEL Integration Approach. The areas for reflection are aligned with the elements of the SEL Integration Approach (Cultivate, Examine, Teach, Model, Coach) and support individuals in considering SEL integration from various angles.

Through reflection statements and accompanying sample indicators, practitioners are able to take stock of the ways in which they currently integrate social-emotional learning into their daily practice, consider areas for growth, and plan for future work. While detailed and comprehensive, the reflection tools were also designed to be accessible and actionable. The prompts, guiding questions, next steps, and suggested supports all combine to form an intentional process; moving from reflection to action.

We consistently ask students to reflect on and revise their work, to consider a social interaction and take the perspective of another, to analyze a challenging task and offer an alternative approach. But seldom are the adults in schools given the same opportunity to pause, reflect, and intentionally plan. Reflecting on one’s strengths and limitations, and making a plan for ways to improve, leads to growth. These tools are intended to support that reflection and growth process.

“We must resist thinking in siloed terms when it comes to social-emotional learning (SEL), academics, and equity. Rather, these elements of our work as educators and partners go hand in hand.”
